"Slipped From a Subtle Skin" Album Release
August 4, 2018
Bella Yaga, the music and performance project of multi-disciplinary artist Anna Johnson in collaboration with Alia Jeraj, Alana Horton, Joni Griffith and Peter Morrow, release their debut album, Slipped From A Subtle Skin at Open Eye Figure Theater on August 4.
Bella Yaga will be joined by opener Eric Mayson, as well as a special roster of video artists, dancers, musicians, clowns, and puppeteers contributing performance and projections to the show, including Ari Newman, Emma Barber, Jay Owen Eisenberg, Katie Kaufmann, Kristi Ternes, and Tony Williams.
Taking inspiration from the worlds of music, theater, and visual art, Bella Yaga seamlessly blends moving image with songs that unite stunning harmonies, textured guitar and violin, and shadowed bass and drums. The resulting performances are earthy yet electronic, rooted in folk traditions yet freshly poetic, constantly collaging new artistic terrains and the textures of the past. The songs on Slipped From A Subtle Skin, written following several deaths in Johnson’s life, explore the liminal space between life and death, touching on transition, decline, transformation, intimacy, healing, and release through subtle, poetic lyrics.
