Managing Director

Reports to: Executive Director
FTE: 0.5-.75 (25-30 hours per week) 

Open Eye Figure Theatre is a nationally recognized non-profit arts center based in Minneapolis. Founded in 2000, our whimsical yet profound work continues to surprise and delight audiences on our jewel box stage housed in a historic storefront, and throughout the Twin Cities with our mobile Driveway Tour. Dedicated to ‘opening eyes, hearts, and minds’ through the power of the performing arts, Open Eye consistently creates a unique, contagious exchange between artists and audiences. 


As the  Managing Director (MD) you are responsible for the professional execution of the financial and organizational systems in support of the Open Eye vision and mission. Working with the Executive Director (ED) and Artistic Producing Director (APD), the MD provides key leadership to create a sustainable and financially sound organization. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage all business activity of the organization. This includes overseeing earned and contributed revenue, budgeting, financial statements oversight, contracts, board communication, maintaining a professional and efficient administrative environment.

  • Supervise related staff that oversees audience services, box office, facilities, Driveway Tour and bookkeeping. 

  • Maintain and improve systems, processes, and procedures, creating a practical infrastructure to support the daily details inherent in running a successful theatre.

  • Drives and manages development and stewardship function, including institutional and individual gifts.

  • Research funding streams and support fundraising efforts and donor relationships including grant writing and event planning. 

  • Attend Board meetings and provided reports to the Board, as requested. 

  • Provide leadership, ensuring  OE is a professional and healthy workplace. 

Qualification and Skill Requirements

  • 5 years  of theater management experience or nonprofit leadership

  • Experience in development and grant writing

  • Ability to establish and maintain vendor relationships 

  • Strong knowledge of financials and budgeting

  • Education 4 year BA or equivalent

  • Excellent Writing and Communication skills

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in the creative arts or theater field

  • Event creation and management 


  • Flexible with some weekends and evenings required


  • Negotiable depending on experience
