Red Herring Puppets Presents: My Grandfather's Prayers

July 23, 2017

Created by Red Herring Puppets

MY GRANDFATHER’S PRAYERS is a theatrical production based on the life of Cantor Izso Glickstein (1890-1947), a Jewish Ukrainian prodigy who settles in Boston, where his powerful golden voice expresses the passion and determination of a people holding on to faith and tradition through the violent diaspora of the 20th century. His soulful singing comforts and inspires a generation of immigrant families including the young Leonard Bernstein. Izso’s remarkable story is told from the point of view of his granddaughter, Lisa Sturz, an award-winning puppeteer who has worked for Walt Disney Imagineering, Jim Henson Productions, Lucasfilm, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, PBS, and many others. Sturz uses shadow puppets, scrolling backgrounds, marionettes, mixed-media film sequences and poetic text to explore her own Jewish ancestry, artistry, spirituality and responsibility. The show is performed by Lisa Sturz and Emily Bader and is intended for adults and older teens.
